How to Choose a Webhosting Company?

If are going to start your own small business website you need to register a domain name and choose web hosting for your site. And one of the toughest decisions you will make for your web site is where it will be hosted. You will want to choose a provider that has a reliable service. If your site is down or takes too long to open up when visitors are trying to get in, it may lead them to click out of your site and move on to the next one with better response. And of course it’s not easy to transferring to a new web host when your old web host fail you.

So it’s really important to pick the right host in the beginning so you will not have to look for another web host after first month later. For this reason, it is probably best to stick with a well known company who you can check reliable references on.

Today, you can get a full-featured professional hosting service for anything between 5 and 14 $ per month. So a quality webhost doesn´t have to be expensive. But, the price differences depend not only on the amount of disk space and monthly bandwidth offered by the webhost but also on certain additional hosting features.

While choosing a webhosting company you have to consider various factors like Support, Service, Pricing, Server Uptime, Downtime and various other features they are providing.

First of all: Choose several hosting companies

Pricing plans
It’s not necessarily true that the most expensive hosts are the best. Just simply compare prices and services and you will find the right host for you.

Amount of web space
A web hosting service provider would usually assign you a certain amount of space on their server. So choose the right amount of space for your website. But don’t forget that you might want to expand your website tomorrow and you would require much more space in future.

Degree of reliability
A site that is not available (online), not updated on time or is down, will lose many online visitors and customers. If an online visitor finds your site down, he is sure to move on to the next link and you lose an important customer or visitor.   If your website is down, you will lose money and also reputation with your business.

Data transfer (Bandwidth):
Check if your new hosting company provides you with sufficient bandwidth for efficient data transfer. Don’t be fooled with „unmilited“ bandwidth. Unlimited bandwidth or data transfer do not exist and they cannot be truly delivered, even though they are offered. Ask your host how limited is you unlimited bandwidth.

Check their support
Does the web hosting service provide 24×7 supports? Can you depend on them? If you need 24-hour technical support, choose the right company.

And last but not least: Test quick response
Send them email with your question. Ask a simple question about their service, and see how fast they respond. They should provide an email address, feedback form or live chat. Compare the response with what they have ‘advertised’ on their website. See how they measure up.

And few small rules:

• After you’ve choosed a hosting company verify if it has support for PHP and MySQL. If you need PHP and MySQL.
• If you are planning to build multiple webistes please verify if you can setup multiple domains on a single account.
• If you are running your own business, I recommend you Virtual Private Server (VPS) Hosting or Dedicated Web Hosting. It’s better for you and for your customers. Find out more here.
• Is good to know that all hosting companies have support for web log analyzers (statistics), email severs, so this will be default, do not worry about that extra options.

What is Bandwidth?

This term is used to measure the amount of data being transferred from your web space. This does not directly relate to the number of ‘hits’ (views) a web site receives. One single hit to a web page that is 100 KB in size uses the same amount of bandwidth as 100 hits to a 1 KB page. And if you have more visitors you need more bandwidth. E.g. If you have on your hosting mp3 file with size 4MB and 1000 people download it, you need around 3.9 gigabytes for bandwidth. So choose wisely.

Term "unlimited bandwidth" or "unmetered bandwidth" as a major selling point of hosting plans. Hosts use false advertising because other hosts do it. They figure that the majority of consumers do not understand how little bandwidth they really need, and will never know that it is not really unlimited. Unlimited bandwidth is one of the biggest marketing ploys since ‘unlimited e-mails’! Web hosting companies that advertise "unlimited bandwidth" are, essentially, falsely advertising their through-put limitations. Some hosts outline in their Terms of Service that you can have unlimited bandwidth as long as you qualify for it. i.e. Your site must use less then, let’s say 100 GB of bandwidth in order to qualify for the unlimited bandwidth feature. As soon as your site goes over that limit they either start charging you for it or cut off your downloads altogether.

So you can stay away from host with unlimited bandwidth, consider that a warning sign that the web host in question may not be giving you a straight deal. But remember, that nothings is free and bandwidth is a commodity. So the simple truth is that bandwidth costs money.

Unlimited bandwidth or data transfer do not exist and they cannot be truly delivered, even though they are offered. Ask your host how limited is you unlimited bandwidth.

How to choose a domain name for your website

The domain names have a suffix or extention, called also TLD (Top Level Domain), which is based on the type of organization it is associated with. Common suffixes include:

.com     commercial business domain
.net       commercial network
.org      nonprofit organizations
.edu     educational institution

The permitted characters for domain are: abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz 0123456789- (All characters are lower case.)

Few tips:

Write down the name of your business. Remembering that short domain name is the easiest to remember! Create a list of possible names using your business name (for example, book.com, ebook.com, newbook.com).

Choose good extension - If a person is surfing around looking for a site, and they know its name, most people will try .com. For the web site owner who wants their site to be found, the rule is: if at all possible, get a .com name. If you are living e.g. in UK, choose local domain name like co.uk etc.

Choose short name - less than 8 characters, ideally. A simple name will roll off the tongue more easily in conversation, look more professional, and have less chance of being mis-typed. Eg. Yahoo.com, google.com etc. ;)

Keywords – Include descriptive keywords that describe your business or product in your domain name. It can increase your search engine ranking for search phrases that include the keywords used in your domain name. Try it: Just type BMW in to google.com

Buy the variations. If you go buy smallcat.com, why not also pick up smallcat.net and other variation with hyphen like small-cat.com  to protect your brand? If possible, do not use hyphens.

If possible, do not use numerical characters, mobile phone text message abbreviations and do not use ‘2′ for ‘to’, ‘4′ for ‘for’, ‘u’, ‘ur’ for ‘your’ etc.

Keep it legit. Try to avoid .ws, .tv, .biz, etc. Most respect is given to .com, .net, or .org domains.

Choose a good domain name, a catchy one! One that tells what your site is about or with what it is different from other similar sites. Make it easy to remember!

You can host your domain/s in various domain providers. And you can use their hosting services or you can change name server records and switch to name servers to you new web hosting provider.
