Virtual Private Server (VPS) Hosting
If you are looking for greater control and performance than a Shared Hosting account, choose Virtual Private Servers. A Virtual Private Server is a single server that is partitioned at the root into multiple dedicated servers. This enables one to share the cost of the network connectivity, hardware, and system maintenance with other hosting customers, with maintaining the flexibility and freedom.
Virtual Private Server technology enables one physical server to house several Virtual Environments which behave exactly like an isolated stand-alone server. This solution is a much more affordable than a dedicated server.
Virtual Private Server hosting is a very attractive hosting solution for a web hosting clients who would like the stability of a dedicated server but on a smaller scale. Your site will be more consistent because it will always have the same amount of access to the CPU, memory, and bandwidth. Virtual Private Servers are also more secure than shared webhosting, because you are allocated your own file system only for you. If a website on the server is hacked, the hackers will only have access to that particular file system and would not harm the other websites on server.
There are few types of VPS hosting:
Managed Hosting
Tools are provided to monitor and control the virtual machine. Physical server and updates are maintained by the hosting provider
Unmanaged Hosting
Typically only minimal services are provided, such as ssh console and reboot. Unmanaged VPS hosting is generally less expensive than managed VPS hosting.
Unmetered Hosting
Similar to unmanaged hosting but a fixed bitrates is offered so that it is not possible to exceed a monthly budget.
Virtual private server hosting: Good for businesses and projects with high traffic.
Advantages of Virtual private server hosting:
+ Root access with ability to install and configure any programs you want
+ The physical server is maintained by the hosting provider
+ Host unlimited websites
+ Host other services, such as a mail server, an FTP server
+ Use your VPS server for backup, file storage, or anything you need
+ Burstable RAM can be provided during times of high traffic or bandwidth usage.
+ Cost is far less than a Dedicated Server and only slightly higher than a quality Shared Hosting
Disadvantages of Virtual private server hosting:
- More expensive than shared hosting
- All server hardware is shared between VPS accounts. This includes processing power, RAM, and disk space
- Users who are not familiar with server administration may have to purchase a managed VPS
- Sometimes the web host does not provide the actual resource as they commit to provide as most of the time virtual server does not use his full resources, so it is difficult to handle operations at a peak level
- You can use the only allocated resources so it is sometime difficult to handle the unexpected the large traffic
